Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?
Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19th 1910 in the YMCA in Spokane, Washington State. When after listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd felt there should be a day to celebrate Father’s as well as mothers. She wanted to establish and official equivalent for male parents. And she had good reason to considering her father was not only a Civil War veteran but also a widower who raised her and her 5 siblings solo!
However it wasn’t until 1972 that thanks to President Nixon, it first became an official holiday in the United States. This was 58 years after the first celebration of Mother’s Day, and 62 years after that first celebration in Washington State.
Despite our unwavering love for our Father’s we still spend less on him than on our Mother’s, with Father’s day only ranking at number 4 in the card giving holidays, behind Mother’s Day – however this still equates to a whopping 72million cards!
The celebrations of Father’s Day also differ around the world, with Thai father’s day traditionally being celebrated by everyone wearing yellow and handing their fathers Canna flowers. Mexican fathers have a slightly more energetic day taking part in a 21km run around the city, while their Finish counterparts get a nice lie in and breakfast in bed and handmade gifts are the order of the day. I’m sure many would like to celebrate in Germany where dads get a three day weekend of being celebrated, although this is needed thanks to a heavy focus on beer drinking as part of the celebrations. Despite differing traditions the emphasis around the world is on celebrating the main man in your life and for everything he has done for you and your family.
